I want to... / FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I live in an apartment or condo. Can I have a grill or any type of fire pit / heater on my condo or apartment patio or balcony?

Unfortunately no. Current fire prevention regulations prohibit the use of an electric grill, a hibachi, a gas or charcoal grill, or other similar devices used for cooking, heating, or any other purpose on any balcony, under any overhanging portion, or within 10 ft. (3m) of any structure or stored on a balcony.   Even though some of these devices do not have an open flame, anything put on them to cook can become an open flame.

  • I want to have a campfire in my backyard. Is that allowed?

NO, but a recreational fire pit is allowed when it meets APCD guidelines.

Click HERE for recreational fire pit requirements, or you may call APCD for more information (502) 574-6000.

Don’t forget to have a fire pit screen cover.

  • What is needed for an open burn to remove debris from my yard? or construction waste?
  • What is an example of an acceptable Fire Pit?

Notice they are placed on non-combustable material and 15 feet from structures. Follow manufacture specifications on location.

  • What is the Occupancy Load of my business space?

This is found on your issued building permit and determined by Louisville's Codes and Regulations Department. Our office provides the sign based on the issued permit.

  • Are there fees for Plan Review? What about Fire Inspection Fees?

Beginning July 1st, 2026, fees will be required for Plan Reviews. Fire Inspections are free unless corrections are not made before the third or more visit/inspection. CLICK HERE for the adopted fee schedule.

  • Can the Fire Department assist with a Fire Drill and/or our emergency evacuation planning?

Yes, our Fire Inspectors are happy to coordinate and assist with fire drills, emergency plans, and evacuation plans. There are no fees for this service.

  • I am a state licenses facility (daycare, boarding home, medical facility, etc) and need a Fire Inspection for my license renewal or application... Who do I call?

State licensed businesses fall under the State Fire Marshal's jurisdiction. AMFEMS is not allowed to provide such inspections. Please contact them at Division of Fire Prevention, Office of the State Fire Marshal 502-573-0382
